Breast-feeding
can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a mother's life.
It is the method planned by nature to nourish and protect newborns.
Many women find breast-feeding to be a loving, natural, convenient,
and inexpensive way to feed their babies.
Although breast-feeding
is natural, it is also a learned skill. Practice and patience
are the keys to successful breast-feeding.
You can start
learning and preparing to breast-feed while you await the arrival
of your baby. Sign up for a breast-feeding class and check
out breast-feeding resources from the Health Education Resource
Center and the Women's Health Resource Center.
Learn as much
as you can, then surround yourself with people who will give
you the encouragement and support you need to breast-feed your
baby. Be easy on yourself, relax, and enjoy this special
experience. By breast-feeding, you are helping ensure your
baby's good heatlh.
Feel free
to discuss any questions with your health care provider, partner,
or other women who have breast-fed their babies. A lactation
specialist someone who teaches women about breast-feeding
and how to prepare for it may also be helpful.
